Holmium, didymium and samarium oxide solutions in perchloric acid are used to check the wavelength scale of a spectrophotometer; the combined holmium/didymium reference has 14 well-defined, interference-free peaks across 290 to 870 nm. The liquids are permanently sealed by heat fusion into quartz cells.
