Toluene in hexane is widely used to characterise UV bandwidth (resolution): the ratio of the peak maximum at 269 nm to the minimum at 267 nm is a measure of the instrument bandwidth. To meet requirements, the instrument spectral bandwidth should not exceed 1.8 nm (EP) or 2.0 nm (USP). Toluene in methanol is a resolution test for derivative spectroscopy; a benzene vapour cell is available for instruments with bandwidths below 1 nm.
